What Nat King Cole Endured in Racist America

It’s almost hard to imagine but almost 65 years ago when Nat Cole moved into a Hancock Park, California home with his family, America was legally and attitudinally racist. Cole was attacked with vandalism and his dog was poisoned. Even 10 years later, he wasn’t allowed to stay in the Las Vegas hotels that he was headlining. Sometimes it doesn’t feel like it, but we have come a long way.

You will always be too much of something for someone: too big, too loud, too soft, too edgy. If you round out your edges, you lose your edge.

Apologize for mistakes. Apologize for unintentionally hurting someone — profusely. But don’t apologize for being who you are.

The ancients are right: the dear old human experience is a singular, difficult, shadowed, brilliant experience that does not resolve into being comfortable in the world. The valley of the shadow is part of that, and you are depriving yourself if you do not experience what humankind has experienced, including doubt and sorrow. We experience pain and difficulty as failure instead of saying, I will pass through this, everyone I have ever admired has passed through this, music has come out of it, literature has come out of it. We should think of our humanity as a privilege.

"What’s something about the eye that most people don’t realize?"
"The eye doesn’t see. The brain sees. The eye just transmits. So what we see isn’t only determined by what comes through the eyes. What we see is affected by our memories, our feelings, and by what we’ve seen before."

NPR On The Road - See the world through the eyes of NPR’s traveling reporters.

NPR Radio Pictures - The prettiest NPR tumblr? Curated by NPR’s multimedia department
